La Comida Img_1183

A perpetual search for good eating in Pátzcuaro has prompted more questions on two of our local Yahoo Groups. My criteria for a "Favorite" are as follows:
• Good food
• Good service
• Reasonable price.

Stuff like chandeliers and linen napkins, waiters with silver serving trays, and magnificent views of the lake are way down on my list of priorities, although I don't mind a nice view or a flowery patio full of art and tchotchkes...

Back home again in colonia Lago III it is good that some things never change. Every afternoon the man with the elotes makes his rounds just like the ice cream man NOB. Some of our customs here just seem more wholesome, and instead of the ice cream bars and candy here our kids are lining up for their elotes, corn on the cob for you northerners.

You can have it cut from the cob and served in cups with your choice of dressings, crema, mayonesa,...

Great for cocktails, and easy.
La Comida Tapas2011

There's always a dilemma with having guests for cocktails. Usually one starts with cocktails, and a few nibbles. Doing a major dinner party may not be in the cards, either because of household disruptions, or back problems, or just because you don't feel like it. Then comes the what do we do now bit, go out for dinner? What if you just don't really want to, or the local restaurants aren't up to snuff?

Here's a solution. A...

Two words: Wang Jiao. Not sure what it means but it translates into great Chinese food here in Morelia. What I was always told is that there is no decent Chinese food in Mexico. "None worthwhile around here. If you find a good Chinese restaurant then let me know" would be the most diplomatic response. I have tried several places over time and none were worth getting excited about. True, I found some passable agridulce, sweet and sour, and that is pleasing...

Jim and Linda P. were in Pátzcuaro yesterday and so we arranged to meet them as well as Terry B. and her husband, Jim from Zirahúen. I was asked to select a restaurant, and chose Lupita's, on Calle Buena Vista # 7, Centro, site of the former Cha Cha Cha.

While I have read recommendations on this restaurant numerous times, we have never managed to dine there. I just pulled up their website and no mention is made of their days of operation nor the times they are open. Anyone have any insight on these questions? Realizing that food is a subjective subject - anyone have any particular entrees that they would recommend?

We were once again at INAM in the process of renewing our FM3s. It was Wednesday and we were weary.

Our FM3s had been delayed due to circumstances which I prefer not to go into here. So during a lull, we retreated to the Auto Lavado/Internet café on the corner, presided over by the affable Sra. Myrna. I did some Internet time, while Doña Cuevas snoozed in a corner.

We were getting hungry, and asked Myrna for restaurant suggestions...

We had our second visit yesterday to Fonda Marceva, in Morelia Centro. A good friend had opined that the food quality had slipped recently. Since we have little record of experience, it's hard for us to judge.

This was our experience yesterday. (Cross posted to the Any Port In a Storm Forum)

Our comida (at 4:30 p.m.) started with a bowl of frijoles caldudos (soupy beans), hot handmade tortillas, and an excellent salsa roja.

La Comida SAM_0279

The new kitchen is still very young and hasn't fully developed or matured yet but she was ready to be used for the first time. It wasn't an elaborate meal or very complete in any way, it never is the first time, but it was very satisfying. I worked her up to it slowly, started getting her hot, and things began to sizzle. By the time it was done she had performed beautifully and I was fully satisfied.

Last week we connected. It was not the first time we had been to Chino Lee's but we had made a couple trips there in the recent past and didn't find it open. It seems the owner, Andy, took his spring break early this year so he could be geared-up and opened-up for the holidays. Why not? Foods that are predominately vegetable are part of the tradition for that week and he was featuring camarrones as his primary meat for this time to fit the holiday tradition.

I create a new chapter here in order to put behind that May Eve bacchanalia topic and also to make this story a bit more manageable and easier to wade through.

More yummy than you can possibly imagine
Bread in a can, I know it sounds bad at first glance, however we served some yesterday and it was a huge hit, as in not a scrap left.

Boston brown bread, either plain, or with raisins, nuts or dates. The first successful batch was made with raisins.

Plans for Christmas include a batch made with dates and pecans in lieu of Christmas pudding which I don't like at all, and neither do most people that I have asked.

So for those adventurous few, here's the recipe.

3.5 cups of sour milk. I used regular milk and added 1 Tblsp. of vinegar per cup to make a...

I live in Lerdo, Durango in northern México where the cuisine is sometimes different from other parts of the country. I have two friends who are excellent cooks. I have persuaded them to let me bring my camera into their kitchens and follow them as they cook for their families.

Señora Martha Favela and Señora Adriana Rosales together have contributed 66 of these photo essay cooking stories. I take the pictures as they are cooking -- nothing is staged or posed for the camera; if I don't pay attention, I miss the shot. The one concession they both make to me is going light on the...

As Dawg has indicated in the past, we spend our winters in Chiapas in San Critsóbal de Las Casas and our summers in Jalisco at Lake Chapala in the village of Ajijic which is a delegacion of the municipality of Chapala. We are quite fond of both places for various reasons and really love the semi-annual change of scene which is substantial. The differences between the places are profound but I won´t go into that here except to say that one of the main differences between the Chapala municipality and San Cristóbal is the splendid and huge indigenous market in the historic center of the old colonial...

well worth a visit
Having been somewhat jaded after our experience at Lu's, we were very happy to find, thanks to Peter, this very good restaurant, so thought it really did deserve its own thread.

At the entrance there are several butcher style refrigerated meat display units offering an enticing array of meats fish and seafood, all beautifully presented. Following the tempting displays there was an old fashioned vegetable stand made up of a number of wooden boxes. Everything was as fresh as if just picked. Moving further along there is a pretty swish bar and several dining rooms. All very nicely decorated....

¡OK, OK!

Dawg has been patient at trying this well-known old palapa seafood joint in Boca Del Rio, a town I find most attractive and a place worthy of a detour on the way down the Veracruz Coast from Puebla for a fine and lengthy seafood lunch preceding an afternoon nap before continuing on south toward Chiapas and so this time I and my darlin´ wife finally decided it was time to stop and dine there but it seems that, all of a sudden, Boca Del Rio has become a warren of cutthroats inclined to dispose of human detritus along popular boulevards in this affluent and attractive seaside...

I'll share my recipe if Don Cuevas will share his.
Tonight, we're having a delicious peach shortcake complete with blackberry sauce, brandy and whipped cream.
I did try biscuits for the very first time ever, however, they didn't look like the photo that Don Cuevas posted. Perhaps it was the overuse of baking powder, or the lack of cream of tartar, however the finished product didn't live up to the standard already set on this board.
Anyhow, I'll share my recipe if Don Cuevas will share his. Let the games begin, and no cheating on the recipe.
In other words, I'll show him mine if he shows me his.

I have had difficulty locating restaurants or even trying to find if such restaurant may exist in Morelia. My hopes of obtaining a telephone directory to eliminate were dashed when I finally did obtain the latest copy a few months ago but found most places were not listed there in either yellow, white, or otherwise colored pages. There must be other sources for that information.

Here are a couple online guides to Morelia businesses. Unfortunately these do not include all restaurants or businesses, presummably just those who pay to advertise through these guides. Here are links to a couple...

When driving from Cuanajo to Tzintzuntzan, we thought it would be a good plan to have a bite of lunch. Previously we had noticed the Cabana Alegre and its somewhat unique appearance. We guessed that it might be part of a chain but didn't let that deter us.
A nice facility that happened to be well screened to reduce friends (flies) joining one in their meal. I thought it a bit different when taking fotos in one of the rooms and noticed that the room appeared to be dedicated to Marilyn Monroe with paintings, posters and fotos adorning the walls. Kathy and I split a plate of mixed (chicken...

Hello! My first post here and I'm glad I found y'all...

I've been visiting Morelia for a while, but I just moved here to live. I actually found this board while searching for a good Chinese Buffet here.

(by the way, if anyone has the phone number to the Wang Jiao Comida China buffet restaurant, I would sure appreciate it)

Anyway, I'm more interested in finding places that serve American or Italian food, stuff that reminds me of home...

So, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and I fully plan on paying forward the favor with my own posts and info.

A promising coffeehouse shines brighter than most
There are more than a few coffeehouses on the perimeter of Plaza Valladolid (San Francisco) in Morelia Centro. They are neighbors to the many Comida China joints.

Not quite, but has potential
A friend on another forum (not Mexico themed) posted a tip for those of us here in Mexico who crave grits.

Maseca makes a product called Harina para tamales Norteños, or something like that.

On her advice, I bought a kilo bag ($19 pesos) at Bodega Aurrerá. and just gave it a first try.

It looks a lot like "speckled" white grits. I took a wild guess, and boiled about 2 cups of water and a good pinch of salt. Then I gradually stirred in about...

With special reference to BBQ Brisket and Pastrami
When we lived in Arkansas during the '80s and '90s, I learned hw to make corned beef, and pastrami. The corned beef process is pretty easy, but the pastrami is a little more challenging, as you need a smoker.

Last summer, I happened across a very big "pecho de res", otherwise known as beef brisket, at Mercado Soriana in Pátzcuaro. I studied various smoker and barbecue websites, until I came up with a successful bbq brisket. You can read about that here

Where's the beef? That is a question that need not be asked. Por la espada. More than you can eat, and then more. And good stuff too, filet mignon wrapped in bacon, costillas, sirloin, pork loin, you name it - well, no, not exactly, they bring you whatever happens to be up at the time. The meseros will continue to come around with knife and a sword full of meat then you just tell them how much you want of it. How much and when to stop, those are the choices...

Check out this site for some nutritional tips and info, some of which may surprise you. For too long we have been fed a line of baloney about what is good for us and what is not. some of the good nutrition hype has actually been selling our health down the river for years. In some cases what we've been told is good sense isn't. Some of that is because back then we just didn't know better.

Just after breakfast in Pátzcuaro this morning Tere and I stopped into a new restaurant supply store on the pereférico in our area. We found the stove we wanted and paid half down until we finish painting the kitchen and will pick up the stove next week when it's done. Actually, we won't be able to "pick it up" because it weighs 261 Kgs. We'll pay the rest and have it delivered - only about three blocks away.

For the difference in price and despite it takes up more room we decided to get the universal model that does it all - 4 burners, parilla, plancha, freidora, gratinador,...
