PostSubject: Fiesta del Señor de Rescate at Tzintzuntzan   Fiesta del Señor de Rescate at Tzintzuntzan EmptyTue 22 Feb 2011, 19:29

This is underway now, my knowledgeable sources tell me, but the best day to attend will be this Sunday, Feb. 27, when the churches of Tzintzuntzan are decorated with flowers; bands play in the forecourt, and artesanías and food will be on sale from various stands.

Saludos,
Don Cuevas

Fiesta del Señor de Rescate at Tzintzuntzan Empty
PostSubject: TWO Big Events this Sunday   Fiesta del Señor de Rescate at Tzintzuntzan EmptyThu 24 Feb 2011, 00:09

Posted with permission by Jacki on the Morelia_Amigos board -

If you are looking for something to do this Sunday, you have two special options. One is a zarzuela (a Spanish operetta) and the other is a patron-saint festival in Tzintzuntzan.

Paul and I saw a zarzuela in Morelia a few years ago and really enjoyed it, even though we could understand little of the words. We missed the jokes, but the music and dance, plus a summary of the story on the program, made it a delightful performance. If you want to read about zarzuelas, go to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zarzuela To read a detailed description of Sunday's offering, "La Tabernera del Puerto", go to
http://www.zarzuela.net/syn/taberna.htm. Performing are the Camerata Juvenil de Michoacan, el Coro de la Secretaria de Cultura, and El Octeto de la UMSNH. It will start at 6:00 at Teatro Ocampo. One can get courtesy tickets from the Departamento de Música, wherever that is. A friend said she would try to find out today.

Don Cuevas said that the Fiesta del Señor del Rescate has started in Tzintzuntzan and in nearby barrios. The big day is this Sunday at the church, which will be decorated with thousands of flowers. There will be a dance of queens, angels and demons and a special mass that starts at 1:00. Under the olive trees will be many stalls offering artesanías and local food specialities. Bring a blanket and have a picnic. To read about the festival go to http://tinyurl.com/RescateTzin in Mexico Cooks! and to http://tinyurl.com/489qe43 in La Voz de Michoacán.

Both events sound like a lot of fun, but Paul and I are opting for the zarzuela. If we can't find tickets, we'll just arrive an hour early and stand in the no-ticket line until they let us in.

Have fun,
Jacki in Morelia

PostSubject: Ayer Fui a la Fiesta—¡Huau!   Fiesta del Señor de Rescate at Tzintzuntzan EmptyWed 02 Mar 2011, 07:33

I spent two hours yesterday at the Fiesta. It was big, colorful, crowded, hot and fairly intense. But I really enjoyed it and took around 110 photos and videos combined. Those I culled to about 60.

A little while ago, I uploaded them to my Picasa Web Album, and I invite you all to have a look. http://tinyurl.com/SrDeRescate
Maybe I'll select a couple of videos and upload them later.

That was enough work for now, so a description will have to wait until I get more rest. When I write a report for my blog, I'll be sure to post a link to it here.

Thanks. I just had a look at your thumbnails. Very colorful stuff. Our hosts in this country really know how to throw a party.

This week I am waiting for the Toritos to arrive in my colonia. I really need to get out and dance and stretch my legs a bit. I have been mostly tied to this computer desk for the past week or so.

Just viewed all of the photos in your series. They really represented just how important these fiestas are to the traditions and character of small towns in Mexico. I am very envious of your ability to attend and feel the spirit!

Believe it or not, that was the first time that I'd been to that fiesta. My wife went to it last year, accompanied by an amiga. That was on a Sunday, not the biggest day.

Confesson: I probably don't need to go there again. Kind of like, "once was fine, twice too much" in regard to the Noche del Grito, in the Zócalo of México City.

"once was fine, twice too much"

I have often felt that I should try something once as long as it wasn't illegal or not too far out there, but I am reminded of how I felt after my first and only bullfight in Spain: "once was horrible and there will never be a second time"! That is the problem with feeling that one cannot make comment on something they have never tried or experienced.

Carnaval season has some good fiestas. It was just in the past year or two I experienced the Toritos. That it comes to my colonia is the plus, comes and goes pausing to perform with other revelers following along with it. My street corner is the corazón of this colonia so it will pass this way for sure. Semana Santa will have a procession with a man bearing a cross and there are many other events throughout the year that pass through our streets. It really is nice to be back in my own colonia again.

I think being on the street for the Running of the Bulls might be a time when once was too much.

I haven't been to the bullfights here. Supposedly Mexico City and Tijuana are about the only places for "the real thing" anymore. I would think the color and ceremony of it would be worth seeing but we do live in much more passive times these days. Los Toritos de Petate used to be La Cabesa del Toro Verdad but is now of straw and color.

Morelia has a couple plazas de toros but what goes on there is more of a corrida or rodeo where I guess they just play with the bulls and try not to get hurt. I haven't been to any of them but if there is color and crowd emotion I would like to try it someday. Tourists want to try everything at once and residents are in less of a hurry. I miss out on a lot of fiestas and it doesn't bother me any, there will be another.

PostSubject: Re: Fiesta del Señor de Rescate at Tzintzuntzan   Fiesta del Señor de Rescate at Tzintzuntzan EmptyWed 02 Mar 2011, 16:58

I was under the impression that most, if not all the bullfights in Mexico were the bloodless type but since I have no interest, I cannot claim that to be an absolute. My biggest problem with the traditional style in Madrid was that it was so slanted in the bullfighter's favor. To start out with they test each bull with practice runs and should they be prone to not charging straight and hooking their head when charging, they are rejected. If they pass that portion of the test, then the guys on horseback start sticking the bull to weaken it. And this is all before the bullfighter comes into the ring. Once in a while, the bull comes out on top but I couldn't see that he really had a sporting chance. To me, it was just a glorified way of killing a bull with way too much pomp and ceremony!

As for running with the bulls, I would have to be very young, really stupid and very drunk!
